“So you’re telling me you ran a random search on Lillymouth residents with a criminal record and Charlie Buckley came up?” Sylvia looked pale without her usual make-up, and even paler since Detective Cluero had informed her that Maggie Buckley’s ne’er-do-well son had set his mother’s messaging account up so that he could see every one of her texts. Unbeknownst to either his mother or the book club ladies it seems Charlie Buckley was not only passing on this info, but he was also being instructed how to act upon it. By whom, now that was the real question. Cluero showed a mug shot photo to both women. It was the same guy who had posed as the curate, though without what had now obviously been a fake beard and glasses.

“Aye,” Clero shook his head, “I put out a call to have him picked up and lo and behold there was a random cutlery drawer in the boot of his vehicle. I should think the DNA you have that the vet collected will be the definitive corroborating evidence putting him at the scene of the crime here. I’ve only spoken to the man briefly, and he’s not keen to talk. Not that I’m surprised. Your pets did a good number on him, we had to have the station nurse have a look at his minor injuries, so you can imagine the mood Buckley was in by the time I got to him. But hopefully I can get it out of him who he’s working for. He’s a small fish in a big pond, mind you, probably quite a few people between him and the person who set you up, Vicar. Besides, I get the impression he’d prefer jail time to having to admit to the big boss that he’s been caught. Quite a lot of fear behind his eyes.”

“I’m so sorry, so sorry, stupid phone! I didn’t even know Charlie was back in town. Maggie told him to sling his hook years ago after he stole her rainy day money,” Sylvia slammed the offensive device down on the table and scrubbed at her face, “I thought I recognised something in the eyes of that supposed clergyman the other week, but I’m old, I’ve met so many people and seen so many TV shows. I hadn’t seen Charlie since he was a teenager must be a decade ago now, so he wasn’t even on my radar.” The housekeeper looked tired and worn down, nothing like the woman who had moved into the vicarage all those months ago. Daisy felt completely responsible.

“It’s not your fault, Sylvia. You’re entitled to friends and an outlet just like the rest of us,” Daisy limped around to put her arm around her housekeeper’s shoulders.

“Aye, but maybe keep the details of the murder investigation to yourself from now on,” Cluero added, “as it is, though, we’ve caught the man who stole the items which helped set up the vicar here, so that’s a new lead and ultimately you’ve helped rather than hindered the case, Mrs.
